Commonly Reported Symptoms
The following is a list of commonly reported symptoms and complications women have been reporting with the use of the Copper & Mirena IUDs.
One of the first set of symptoms experience by women after insertion of the Copper or Mirena IUD is increased PMS symptoms, including cramping, bloating, irritability, spotting, and feeling achy. Doctors tell patients that this is normal after insertion. However, for many women, the PMS symptoms continually get worse and debilitating. Women that have not typically experienced PMS prior to the use of an IUD are suddenly developing significant episodes after insertion.
"The Mirena eventually made me feel like I was on the verge of pms all the time with no period or follow through to give relief to the mental build up."
Severe depression is a very common reported symptom from the use of the IUD. The depression has ranged from mild to extremely debilitating. Women find themselves unable to control thier emotions and develop anger and high negative emotional outburst for no apparent reason. Many women have reported suicidal thoughts. Know that: You are NOT alone with this symptom and it is NOT 'all in your head'!
"I can't put into words how I was feeling exactly, all I know is I wasn't myself."
"Never in my life have I ever experienced such desperate hopelessness as I have since having the IUD inserted. "
Anxiety / Panic Attacks
Along with depression, women are commonly reporting unexplained and irrational anxiety and panic attacks for no reason, even in women who have never experienced them before and without any apparent triggers.
"I was amazed when I searched copper IUD and anxiety to find so many women out there that experinced this. I would have to say that I did not connect the anxiety to the IUD at first."
One of the first symtpoms women tend to notice is an increasing sense of fatigue. Normally healthy active women are being reduced to being barely able to get off the couch. The body is being stressed and strained to the point that it has no energy for normal daily functions or activities.
"I have absolutely no energy for anything. Just getting out of bed in the morning or to bed at night feels like climbing Mt. Everest"
Dizziness is reported in several different ways. Some people experience it as a light-headed sensations while others feel it as a sense of the room spinning or like the ground is moving.
"I felt like I was constantly living in an earthquake. The ground felt like it was moving. I would have to always be holding onto a wall or something, even when I was sitting."
Many women have reported headaches from a constant dull ache, all the way to regular full blown migraines.
"It felt like rubber bands were being snapped inside my head'
"I was constantly going back to my doctor about the frequent headaches and dizziness"
Another very commonly reported symptom by many women is that they develop extreme brain fog. Simple tasks become very challenging. Many report having difficulties recalling simple words or common names, and having problems speaking in complete sentances. It becomes a significant challenge to focus on any task.
"I thought I was going crazy."
"It felt like my brain was disconnecting from the rest of me. I couldn't think straight or focus on anything."
Many women have described the beginning of heart palpaitations within a short time after the insertion of an IUD and the palpitations getting progressively worse over time. Many contribute the palpitations with new food and liquid intolerances. If you are experiencing palpiations, try an elimination diet to see if they are caused by certain foods or beverages. (See Allergies / Intolerances for more info)
Skin and Hair Problems
Skin tends to become pale and hair becomes very dry, coarse, and brittle. In addition, many women report losing hair at an exponential rate.
"I used to have beautiful soft long flowing hair but since using the IUD my hair has become so coarse that it is hard to manage."
"Every time I have a shower, I end up with huge handfuls of lost hair. Let's not even talk about how much is on the floor or my brushes when I am getting ready."
Many women have been experiencing irregular periods combined with a significant increase in duration and the amount of bleeding and increased menstral clots.
There are also reports from women who have experienced an extremely foul smell both during and in between their periods, that they never used to get prior to or after using the IUD.
Allergies / Intolerances
There appears to be some direct link between the use of the IUD and new allergies or severe intolerances to foods and liquids. Some of the more commonly reported ones are:
Dairy, wheat and other grains (not gluten but the grain itself), caffeine, alcohol, eggs, corn,
"I used to be able to eat pretty much anything I wanted. Now I am reduced to an extremely limiited diet. Even with eating as healthy as possible, I'm still having reactions that can sometimes disable me for days.
Loss of Sexual Desire
Many women are reporting a significant loss of sexual desire. We believe this is partially due to the suspected effects the IUD is having on women's ovaries and hormones. From mild changes in the menstrual cycle to full blown pre-mature menopause. Not to mention, with all these other changes women are going through, most women feel too ill and/or physically exhausted to be sexually active with a partner.
Unexplaind weight gain. Normally healthy women are suddenly finding they cannot keep the weight off and also that the symptoms are making it harder to be active and healthy.
We believe these are caused by the suspected hormonal changes as a result of using the IUD. We recommend you ask your doctor to send your for a complete hormone panel. These should include:
Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
Leutinizing Hormone (LH)
Prolactin (some women have experienced nipple discharge)
* If you have medical coverage, try to get your doctor to repeat these tests at least every 6 months and keep a record of your results.
Some women have experienced shakiness, tremors, and neurological symptoms either associated with some of the new allergies and intolerances, or because of the anxiety and/or neurological effects from the use of the IUD.
"I felt like I was devloping Parkinson's. I started to notice intermittent tremors in my hands and feet."
Infertility and/or Premature Menopause
We have reports of some women who have gone into full premature ovarian failure and early pre and post menopause before the age of 40 (despite a family history of late menopause).
Many women have expressed a new craving for sweets. These have ranged from mild to an all out must have on a daily basis.
Extreme Shortness of Breath
In combination with the extreme fatigue, many women have also been experiencing significant shortness of breath.
"It feels like there is not enough oxygen in the air or in my body."
"After years of being a regular long distance runner, I felt like I was going to pass out with simply walking or going up stairs. Everything physical felt like a huge draining task. This got much better a few months after having the IUD removed."
Perforation & Migration
There are extensive accounts of an IUD perforating the uterus and in some cases, migrating to other areas of the body.
Many of the current potential lawsuits are focusing mainly on perforation and migration. We want to encompass ALL the problems that the IUDs are causing women because many women are unware that these other side effects and complications may also be due to the use of an IUD.
There have been reports of people having significant inflammation and bleeding of the gums around their teeth while the IUD is implanted, with this resolving after the IUD has been removed.
Some people have reported blurred vision, beginning a short time after insertion and lasting beyond when the IUD is removed. We are questioning whether inflammation in the body is putting pressure on the optic nerves. This is different from just a change in a persons eyewear prescription. This symptom often comes and goes and returns vision back to normal after the flare-up.
These are some of the symptoms that women are NOT warned about. Don't wait until it's too late for you! If you start to develop ANY of these symptoms, I urge you to PLEASE PLEASE get the IUD removed as soon as possible before you are left with any long-standing health complications. I wish there had been someone there to warn me of these symptoms; but back in the early 2000's, when the IUD resurfaced, I was not able to find stories from other women, as online forums and sharing websites such as Youtube & Facebook did not exist yet. Now, one quick Google search and you can find numerous testimonies and forums from women. If this website can prevent even just one woman from having to go through what I have gone through and what I still live through on a daily basis, then this website will be worth it. For those of you who have also been affected, let's work together to force these companies to be held accountable for the damages their products are causing to women around the world." Something to think about...
IUD companies have stated that they are not entirely sure "HOW" the intrauterine device works, only that it is effective at preventing pregnancy by creating an inflammatory environment where an egg and sperm will not fertilize or attach to the uterus. So, if an IUD is creating an environment in women's bodies that nature's cellular biology is determining to be too unsafe to grow or sustain human life, then why are we women allowing these products to be put into our bodies? This is different from using a pill, which prevents an egg from being released at all. As numerous studies on pregnancy have pointed out, our bodies are very intricately connected and creating a toxic environment in one area of the body is certain to cause reactions in other areas of the body. It is time that we speak up and prevent these companies from doing more harm, and seek compensation for the many women who have already been seriously affected by their products.
